Experimental Type
This was one of my favorite pieces that I have worked on. I thought it was enjoyable to learn about handwriting calligraphy. The first poster is a remake of a “help wanted” newsletter from an old publisher from 1914. This was handwritten with a pen on tracing paper. The work was photographed, photoshopped, and vectorized through Adobe Illustrator. A mask was applied on top to create texture.
The second poster is calligraphy made with Heinz Ketchup. The concept came from the location of my kitchen which used words instead of coordinate numbers. The words drip, tells, and spices from my kitchen’s location would be the perfect opportunity to use ketchup as my writing tool. This was photographed and edited with Photoshop to fix leading and space issues. My name is also made with a brush and ink then vectorized to give it a handlettered look.

Sketches along the way…
I have made different variations of sketches for my two posters. For the help-wanted poser, I used a method called block lettering design. I experimented with different blocking to see which was visually pleasing.
For the second poster, I focused more on placement than anything so I experimented with moving the words around. I wanted to see the visual balance, space, and flow of everything.
